Ancient Bronzes of the Asian Grasslands, from the Arthur M. Sackler Foundation
September 2, 2008 - December 14, 2008
- 11:00-5:00
"Ancient Bronzes of the Asian Grasslands" brings to life the complex cultures that flourished across an enormous expanse of territory from northern China and Mongolia into Eastern Europe, and reveals the cross-pollination of cultures throughout a vast region. These small-scale personal objects were eminently portable, reflecting the lifestyles of these horse-riding nomads. They reveal how the steppe dwellers relied upon the animal kingdom as a primary source of symbolic imagery to indicate tribe, social rank, and connection to the spirit world. More Info

AMHERST CINEMA TO RUN SERIES
September 29, 2008 - November 19, 2008
AMHERST CINEMA TO RUN SERIES “FILM AND ’68 – HOT AND COOL”
Marks 40th Anniversary of 1968 with Films and Audience Discussions
Starting on Monday, Sept. 29, the Amherst Cinema Arts Center will be presenting an eight-week retrospective of films that capture the essence of 1968, one of the most turbulent years in western history since World War II.
The film series will run on consecutive Mondays from Sept. 29 through Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. Monday evening screenings will include introductions by Five College film faculty and post-film discussions led by these film experts. Second showings of each film are scheduled for consecutive Wednesdays at 2 p.m.
The final show of the series is a one-time DVD showing of the latest work by contemporary filmmaker John Gianvito, who will be present for the screening. This show is scheduled at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 19.
In terms of style, the films range from the surreal science fiction favorite, “2001: A Space Odyssey,” to the intensely controversial “Hearts and Minds,” a critique of the Vietnam war. Michael Antonioni's loose narrative "Zabriskie Point" features the music of Pink Floyd and the Grateful Dead. “Medium Cool” mixes love and the relevance of protest at the 1968 Democratic Convention. Jean-Luc Godard's "La Chinoise," was eerily prescient about the student uprisings which followed the film’s release.

Macbeth at UMass
October 10, 2008 - October 19, 2008
- 2:00
The Massachusetts Center for Renaissance Studies at the
University of Massachusetts Amherst and the Renaissance Center Theatre Company
will present
Macbeth on Oct. 10, 11, 17 and 18 at 7:30 p.m. and on Oct. 12 and 19 at
2 p.m. All performances will be held in the black box theatre on the grounds of the
Renaissance Center.
Director Nathaniel Leonard, a PhD Student in English Literature at the
University of Massachusetts Amherst, will emphasize Macbeth’s complex family
relationships and deeply human interactions more than the supernatural and epic
elements of the plot. In this production of William Shakespeare’s Scottish Play the
performers seek to give the characters a depth that is often overlooked, especially
with regard to the iconic Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. The intimacy of the
performance space highlights the humanity and violence that characterize the text
and production.
Mr. Leonard has assembled a cast from around the Pioneer Valley and
Berkshires. The title role of Macbeth will be played by North Adams’ Main Street
Stage veteran and 2008 Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts graduate Sean
McHugh. Amherst College Concert and Production Manager Sara Leonard will
perform the role of Lady Macbeth. Jonathan Turbin, also previously seen at Main
Street Stage, will play Macduff. The cast is rounded out by local celebrity and
pioneer valley stage veteran Walter Carroll (Duncan, First Murderer, Seyton) and
students from across Western Massachusetts. University of Massachusetts Amherst
is represented by first year students Tom Gostanian (Malcolm) and Paul Devlin
(Banquo, Lennox). Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts junior Ryan Ross will play
Ross. Amherst College sophomores Kathryn Libby (First Witch, Lady Macduff,
Donalbain, Doctor) and Natasha Smith (Second Witch, Messenger, Servant
Attendant, Gentlewoman) are joined by Amherst Regional Middle School 8
th Grader
Gabrielle Holme‐Miller (Third Witch, Fleance, Macduff’s son, Lord) to comprise the
“weird sisters.” Mr. Leonard has previously directed for the Edinburgh Fringe
Festival and Kenyon College.
Tickets are $15 for the general public and $10 for students and seniors.
Reservations are not required but are highly recommended as seating is limited. For
more information or to reserve your tickets call 413/577‐3600 or email
renaissance@english.umass.edu
. All performances will take place at the
Massachusetts Center for Renaissance Studies at 650 E. Pleasant Street, Amherst,
Mass. 01002.
This is the fourth major event in the Renaissance Center’s Year of
Shakespeare marking their tenth year of service to the University of Massachusetts
Amherst community. Special programming throughout the year will be generously
supported by the Office of the Provost of the University, and by sponsor 88.5 FM –
WFCR, NPR News and Music for Western New England. The Massachusetts Center
for Renaissance Studies contributes to the field of Renaissance studies with
research, teaching and outreach to the campus, the community and beyond More Info

In Good Spirits: New Musical at the Arena Civic Theatre Oct 17,18,19,24,25,26
October 17, 2008 - September 29, 2008
- 2:00
A R E N A C I V I C T H E A T R E
presents THE New MUSICAL
IN GOOD SPIRITS
Arena Civic Theatre will present a hauntingly funny new musical In Good Spirits, by local author/composer Howard Odentz, at the Shea Theater in Turner's Falls. The score was orchestrated by Emmy Award winning composer Bruce Zimmerman with vocal arrangements by Amy Roberts-Crawford.
Performances will be Fridays and Saturdays, October 17, 18, 24, 25 with matinees Sundays October 19 and 26 at 2 PM.
Tickets can be reserved by calling the Shea Theater, 413-863-2281, ext. 3 or purchased at The World Eye Bookshop in Greenfield, the Jones Library in Amherst, and at the door the day of the performance. Ticket prices are $13 for adults, $11 for seniors and students.
In Good Spirits is a rollicking new musical which tells the story of five mismatched ghosts from various historical times who are stuck in limbo and are doomed to haunt the theater in which, for various reasons, they died. The ghosts include a grouchy Shakespearean actor who was a Civil War era draft dodger (played by Steve Woodard of Leverett); Tequila, a flamboyant drag queen (Dave Peck of Greenfield); 1920s flapper (Dawn Ross of Northampton); two lovebirds trapped in the 1950s (Dom Baird of Greenfield and Sarah Kaczmarek of Sunderland). When a community theater group, The Quabbin Memorial Players, moves in and cannot afford the royalties for their first show, the ghosts have to decide whether to haunt them out or help them. When--October 28th, 2008 Doors Open 7:00 PM /// Film & Discussion-- 7:30 PM /// Concert -- 8:15 PM
Where: Academy of Music Northampton, MA, 274 Main St. Northampton, MA 01060
"We are going to surprise reality until it changes!" These are the words of Gabriel Meyer Halevy, co-founder of the Sulha Peace Project, an annual international peace and reconciliation festival in the Holy Land. Resplendent with music, dance, theater, spirituality and interreligious dialogue, the grassroots peace initiative has steadily grown from a small group of 150 to about 5,000 participants in 7 years. The Sulha Peace Project and the Israeli band, ‘Amen’ will present a film screening, talk and concert on stage at the Academy of Music Theatre in Northampton, Massachusetts on October 28th at 7:30 p.m.
'Sulha,' an Arabic word meaning 'pardon,' or 'forgiveness,' is an indigenous Middle Eastern custom for reconciling differences. After receiving the personal blessings of the Dalai Lama, and infused with new energy from the growing annual and smaller local gatherings, the co-founders of the project are now bringing their message to a greater audience through an international tour celebrating the release of Amen's new CD, entitled, "Hateva (Nature) – The Skin of God."__The evening will begin with an introduction to the grassroots Israeli-Palestinian peace effort with co-founder, Gabriel Meyer Halevy. The presentation will include the screening of a 20 minute documentary ‘On the Way to Sulha’, a grassroots movement that draws Israelis, Palestinians, Druze, Bedouin, academics, peacemakers, activists, children, artists, professionals, elders, clergy, and educators; both secular and religious. The deeply transformative gatherings aim to rebuild trust, restore dignity and move beyond the political agenda. You are invited to both witness and join in this important process. More info is available at http://www.sulha..com/__Following the opening presentation will be an enchanting 80-minute musical performance of rich fusion, world beat and sacred healing melodies by the 5-piece World Music band, 'Amen.' Lyrics will be in English, Spanish & Hebrew with a twist of Arabic and Aramaic. Amen will be performing songs from their new release, 'Hateva – The Skin of God,' a follow-up to their beloved 2001 CD of sacred, meditation music, 'Merkava..'__Amen features Israeli musicians: Amir Paiss ( formerly of the band Sheva - santur, guitar, vocals) & Gabriel Meyer Halevy ( vocals, guitar). Guest musicians will include: Harel Shachal ( wind instruments), Emmanuel Man ( bass) and Gilad ( percussion)
The evening will be followed by a light Middle Eastern meal and open discussion of the Sulha movement for a select group of VIP donors who wish to support_the cause. Cost $90.00 includes front section seating and VIP passes.
For further information about the Amen Sulha Peace Concert, or to schedule a radio or news interview with the co-founder, please phone concert organizer Joel Caplan at 413-527-6191. Tickets are $14-20. Advanced tickets may be purchased at sulha.tix.com or by calling 1-800-504-4849 More Info

Chiara String Quartet Performing at Watermelon Wednesdays
July 9, 2009
- 7:30
The Chiara String Quartet at Watermelon Wednesdays
The Chiara String Quartet is performing at Watermelon Wednesdays in Whatley, MA on Wednesday July 9, 2008. The performance will take place at 7:30PM At the West Whately Chapel near the intersection of Conway and Williamsburg Roads.
148 Conway Rd.
West Whately, Massachusetts 01039 USA
phone: (413) 665-3741
Website: www.watermelonwednesdays.com
“The Chiara Quartet gave these works luminous performances, underlining the sweet-toned character of Ms. Frank’s score and the mystery and exoticism of Mr. Zhou’s work. But the best performances were searing accounts of the Bartok and Golijov pieces, for which the players produced a tone that ranged from glowing warmth to hard-edged acerbity, which each of these searing works demands.” – The New York Times More Info
